πόλος, ὁ (πέλομαι), 1) der Punkt, die Achse, um die sich Etwas dreht, bes. die Erd- und Himmelsachse, auch ihre Endpunkte, Nord- u. Südpol; οὐράνιόν τε πόλον νώτοις ὑποστενάζει, Aesch. Prom. 427; λαμπρῶν ἄστρων πόλον ἐξανύσας, Eur. Or. 1685; Ar. Av. 179 ὀρνίϑων πόλος, komisch erklärt ὥςπερ εἴποι τις τόπος· ὅτι δὲ πολεῖται τοῦτο καὶ διέρχεται ἅπαντα, διὰ τοῦτό γε καλεῖται νῦν πόλος.
